EBScouts In The News: Mizener earns Chief’s award

Article from the Flamborough Review on Christian M., 1st Carlisle's 2013 Chief Scout's Award recipient

CJ 2013

Day 1: With eager faces we piled onto the plane in full scout uniform talking about CJ and the activities we would be doing.
After a long and boring 4 hour flight we stepped off and got our gear onto carts and onto the bus. When we finally arrived at camp we carried all our heavy gear to our campsite and when all the gear was set up at camp we threw a tarp over our gear due to light rain.

The tents went up very fast and everybody had their gear in them, then we went to set up our shelter it was pretty easy. When the stoves where in the shelter we waited a little bit till opening. When we arrived at opening they were singing a song, after the song the camp leader spoke but I couldn’t hear most of it as I was sitting away from the speakers.  When we got back to camp it was free time so I went badge trading, it was very fun and the crowd was huge.  That night the PL’s and APL’s cooked mug up. After mug up I went to be with my tent mates Joel Vangemert, Joey, my brother, and Lucas Johnson.

Day 2: When we woke up in the morning we had a nice breakfast and made our lunch, we then headed off for spiritual time where we listened to many different prayers and learned about the scout compass.

After Spiritual time we had future world which was basically pioneering.  It was not a very exciting activity because we did a low ropes course where our low ropes activities weren’t very fun, next we did an activity called the amazing race, where we had an envelope filled with activities we had to complete.  After the activities it was free time so I went badge trading, had some ice cream and had dinner.

Day 3: When I woke up on day 3 I had a nice breakfast with great oatmeal.  After breakfast we had free time which I spent badge trading and exploring the X centre. Then our patrol, the hungry hippos, went to underwater world, which I could not participate in due to my ruptured eardrum.  After a couple of hours sitting around we headed back to camp where we had free time which I again spent badge trading.

Day 4: Today our patrol was on duty patrol so we cooked and cleaned and the worst of all, an early wakeup call so we could cook breakfast. When we woke up at 6:00 a.m. we started cooking and making bagged lunches for the other 2 patrols that were going to the Calgary Stampede.  That day we had the X centre which was basically free time. During the X centre I went badge trading, programmed a robot and went to the internet cafĂ©.  Next we did water crafting which I again couldn’t do. When we got back to camp I noticed we had a to do list for the spirit of the jamboree award. I became extremely interested and decided that we should invite a troop over for dinner because it was just our patrol. After some difficulties with planning, that I smoothed out, everything worked out just fine.

Day 5: Today was the best day by far as we were going to the West Edmonton Mall!  After a hurried breakfast we hopped on the buses and headed to the mall. When we arrived, we went to the bathroom and then the food court to eat, I had McDonalds.  After eating I went Ice Skating and did a ropes course, then I headed down to the water park and waited for everybody else. When everyone was there I headed off to play bowling with scouter Don.  After that we went to Old Spaghetti Factory for dinner, I had a great pasta.

Day 6: Today we had archery which was very fun, I wasn’t that great at it. Archery was a short activity with a long wait.  After archery we had brontosaurus riding where we played steal the bone, then we moved onto leather craft which was impossible, when suddenly the field was evacuated.  When we got back to camp it was raining and the wind had knocked our shelter over.  After that we had free time which we spent badge trading.

Day 7: We had duty patrol again so we woke up early and cooked, we made French toast.  After that we went to Fly like a pterodactyl where we did drawing activities, Frisbee golf and dinosaur games.  Then when it came to the zipline line it was time to leave so they said we could come back later.  After lunch I packed up my stuff and then we left to go to the zipline again, it was very fun.  After that, more free time and badge trading

Day 8: Today we packed up all the gear and left for the airport. I bought some dinner and got on the plane. When we got back I was happy to see my parents we headed home and I remembered what a great time I had at CJ 2013.

12th Canadian Scout Jamboree - CJ'13

DAY ONE
I arrived at the airport with my parents and my brothers at 6:00 in the morning. We said our goodbye's and off we went. First we had to go through security, everybody was checked in and we were all good to go. We got on the plane and off we went. Four hours later we were in Alberta. We got off the plane and got on a bus. As soon as I got on the bus I fell asleep and two hours later Joel was waking me up. When we got off the bus we walked into our campsite carrying all of the gear. It was heavy, but we finally we made it to our site. After setting everything up we went to sleep.  I tented with my brother Josh, Joel and Lucas.

DAY TWO

I got up in the morning and had a nice breakfast. We then headed off to spiritual time. We sung O Canada and listened to some different religions homilies. Then we left to have lunch. After lunch we had future world. Personally I think that future world was the most boring activity we did all week. All we did was, low ropes and an activity called amazing race. The activity I had the most fun at was the human pyramid because I got to be at the top. After that we went back to the site had lunch and free time for the rest of the day. I of course spent free time badge trading. Then we had dinner, more badge trading, mug up and then we went to sleep.

DAY THREE

I got up and was told we had free time until lunch so I badge traded all morning, of course. Then it was off to underwater world. Our first activity was rafting.  Me, Liam and Scouter Bill got into the raft that had HOLES IN IT! I bailed, Scouter Bill paddled and I don't know what Liam was doing. We did four laps until finally we sank. After that we had to use pressurized air to make a wooden box filled with cinderblocks float. It was hard and lots of people dropped out because the lake was to cold and just when we were about to give up it worked. After that nobody wanted to do the last activity, snorkelling, except me and my friend Joel. Snorkelling was a lot of fun. Then we all went back to the campsite, did some badge trading, had mug up and dinner and went to sleep.

DAY FOUR

I got up, had a nice breakfast and headed out to the x center. Me and Joel programmed a robot, sumo wrestler, played air hockey and went to the internet cafe. Then we came back to the site and had lunch. After lunch we went to water crafting. First we went rafting, it was really fun until we got sunk by another raft. Joel and I swam our raft in. After that we went kayaking where I got sunk by Callum twelve times, but I had fun anyways especially when Joel sunk Callum. Then we had dinner, badge trading and went to sleep.

DAY FIVE

Today was the day at the West Edmonton Mall. We had breakfast and got on a bus. Three hours later we were at the West Edmonton Mall. As soon as we got there we went straight for the bathrooms we were all very happy because the toilets actually flushed. After that we all threw away the sandwiches we brought and went straight for the food court. After our great meal we went to the amusement park and went on a bunch of rides. On one ride we got to shoot zombies. After that we went shopping for about an hour. Then we went to the water park and it was amazing. One of the slides did a 'loop t loop' and the wave pool was insane. The water park was fun but it was time to go have dinner at the old spaghetti factory. The food was great.  After dinner, we took another three hour bus ride back to the site. We all came home and went to sleep.

DAY SIX

Today was archery. We ate breakfast and headed out. I hit the red target... except it was on someone else's target. Then we had lunch. After lunch we had fly brontosaurs riding. First we played guard the bone and then we did leather crafting. After leather crafting it started to poor rain and we had to evacuate the field. We all went back to site and played cards in the thunder and lightning. After the rain cleared up we had free time for the rest of the day which I of course spent badge trading.

DAY SEVEN

Today was zip line. We had breakfast and headed off to the first activity, it was cave pictures. We had to draw cave pictures that told a story. Next we went to rope tying which I found very hard. After that we had to miss zip line and go eat lunch. After lunch we went zip lining while everybody else packed up. Then we had dinner, free time, mug up and went to sleep.

COMING HOME

Today we left CJ. We packed everything up put it on the bus and headed out. As soon as we got to the airport we got something to eat, I went to Tim Horton's. After that we got on the plane and came home.  My parents picked me up at the airport.  My little brother was sick so we had to leave quickly.  When I got home, I had a nice meal and a hot shower.  Then I got to sleep in my own bed.

CJ was great and I will never forget it!

D.I.B.C 2013

We left for Dorchester around 6:30 and arrived at Camp Bel at 8:00. It was good weather right then. I gave everyone their tent assignments and started set-up. At the beginning of the camp we were late to get to the Leaders meeting because Scouter Colin had to get his dinner from Wendy’s.

  • Cubs a little rowdy, fooled around a lot around the tents. Sometimes they listened when a leader talked to them.
  • Meals were good and delicious, next time I plan a menu I would ask people much earlier for their choices. The french toast was burnt, so next time I would make sure the person on the duty roster for that meal is experienced cooking that meal.
  • Tent arrangements were in order
  • The out trip to the Rifle Range and Archery was a  "blast"!

A leader called our parents to ask if we could be picked up early, I am not sure why, but some of us had to leave at 10. Before we left almost everything was done. The scubs were not very helpful about cleaning up; they were fooling around, so they will need to work on that for next year.

Grand River Canoe Trip Report

Myself and Scouter Al, Scouter Brent, another Scouter and scouts from Carlisle drove to Grand Experiences in Paris to rent our 2 canoes. We drove the canoes to Cambridge, and dumped there.
  • One potential problem was Scouts were wearing jeans to canoe
  • We were switching canoes and from stern and bow in the water, which I liked.
  • We went through some rapids that were small and we went through two rapids that were just ranked as a one
  • After lunch we went through a few bridges and between rocks about 1 meter apart and some of us got through it without touching the rocks and some didn’t
  • After we stopped in Paris we brought the canoes up and put the canoes from Grand Experience back, and then drove home, happy after a day of paddling on the Grand.

Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology Tour

On April 9, 2013 we went to the Hamilton Steam Museum for a tour. It was very interesting and informative. When we went there we learned about how the engines work on how the water is compressed in the cylinder part of the front and turned into steam and how all the excess water in the tubes is reused into the next water after they run out in the cylinder. Some of the engine companies they used are called Stewart. We also learned that the metal part that moves the wheel is sort of like a see-saw. There are 2 of them and in between the see-saws there is a walking beam to fix that part of the lever or to get to one end to the other It was hard for the people that oiled the steam engines because of the cups used to oil it, some parts are easy to oil and some parts can cut your fingers off.

All-Section Winter Camp 2013

Winter camping it was great except for the cold.  When we first got there we threw our stuff in a HEATED lodge. Then we went on a hike and it lead to a camp fire. We cooked hot dogs over the campfire, they were great.  We then went back to the ledge and went to sleep. The next day we built rockets, played capture the flag, went on a long hike (felt like about 20 kilometers) and we also moved all of our stuff to cabins. We had an amazing turkey dinner and then it was time for campfire. I did Scout 's Own. It was cool. There were great stories, cheers, and skits. We had a lot of fun and we watched a movie about aliens and all that sci-fi stuff. Next on the agenda, sadly, we had to go to bed. The next day we had breakfast, packed up and left. It was a great camp and I really enjoyed it!

Space Camp Westaskawin 2013

Before camp we went on a long drive in an attempt to find the camp we about an hour late. After arriving at the camp we dumped our stuff in the heated lodge and got ready for a hike. On the hike we had to go through a lot of trees and even climb a small hill. Eventually we got to a fire pit and we all sat down when one of the Scouters said; “Unless somebody wants to go back and get the firewood and hotdogs let’s keep going.” As we hiked I saw that we were just taking a longer route when we could have taken a shorter route. When we got to the real fire pit we saw a bunch of lodges.  One of the Scouters told us that these where the lodges for the next night.
After that one of the Scouters had gotten the weenies and the firewood, he took the short way, we all got to roast our hot dogs and they were really tasty. When we got back to the cabin we had mug up I ate some cookies and drank some hot chocolate after that I went to bed.
The next morning when I woke up we had to pack up and get ready to move to the unheated lodge’s and unpack. When we arrived I dumped my stuff in a lodge to learn that one person was in a lodge by themselves so I had to move. After all the unpacking we started a fire that we wanted to keep running all day.  We sat around burning sticks and then left for breakfast.
When we arrived back at the heated lodge many of the Cubs where still sleeping.  That didn’t last long as after a couple of minutes the Scouters woke them up. As we were eating breakfast the Beavers started coming in.  After breakfast we had a scavenger hunt where we went searching for pictures of animals on cardboard. It was really fun and seeing all the animals was cool. After the scavenger hunt we built rocket ships with some paper wood tape and paint.  My rocket ship was set for a disaster mission.
When we finished the ships we had lunch and after that we headed to the campsite to roast some bread after 1 long try I was bored and went sliding on some ice on the frozen river. When we were finished sliding we played capture the flag as a troop it was really fun I got to climb up a hill and even run with the flag I was tagged though. When we went down for dinner we got to eat turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables and ham.  I only ate potatoes and turkey. Oh yeah, I had gravy as well.
After dinner we watched a movie and then had mug up of popcorn and hot chocolate. When we got back to the lodges I sat by the fire for a bit than went to bed in the morning I packed up sat by the fire and then went down to have breakfast of pancakes and sausages. After helping clean up I got to go home.

Space Station Wetaskawin Winter Camp Report

Unfortunately the most difficult event of this camp was trying to find it.  We spent a little more time on the road then we expected.  But once we arrived the fun began.  Since my dad was one of the volunteers at Camp we got to pull in by the lodge, making the walk less of a distance.  One of the Scouts approached me and asked me if i wanted to spend the weekend sleeping in a tent.  I of course jumped at the opportunity to do this as it was a requirement for my Chief Scout Award.  That night was a slow night.  We ended up roasting weenies on the fire and I returned to my tent with a full belly and drifted off to sleep.

As I woke the next morning I had to make my way to the facilities but I was so warm and snug in my sleeping bags I left it till almost the last minute.  I ran out of my tent in my t-shirt and long johns, I rushed through the door and made my way over sleeping Cubs and Scouts. After I used the facilities I could smell bacon.  I returned to my tent and woke up my sleeping partner and it still wasn’t time for breakfast.  We decided to play some tether ball.  After we ate breakfast we could not go tobogganing because there was not enough snow.  So we participated in a challenging nature hunt. We went back to the fire, we were rewarded prizes (gummie treats) and we made homemade bread on a stick, yummy.  After my many attempts at this I got bored and started to slide on the ice with my friends. We also slide through a tube which was fun.

After lunch we played capture the flag until dinner time.  Dinner was a huge full turkey dinner with ham on the side.  After dinner in which we didn’t have to do the dishes as the volunteers did, thanks dad; we prepared for campfire.  Some of my fellow Scouts and myself were preforming a skit.  After campfire we watched a space movie.  I was sitting by the washroom, worst possible seat in the house.

When the movie ended I returned to my tent for lights out.  We woke the next morning to another great breakfast again cooked by volunteers.  After breakfast we packed our gear, and received our camp crest.  As people were leaving I helped clean the lodge, took down my tent and carried my gear to the car, which again was close to camp.  What a great winter weekend.
